Yerba Mate 2. Cup with a small enough top to fully cover with your hand or a Mate Gourd 3 A bombilla (Mate Straw) 4. Water If you're using a new gourd, you'll need to cure it. Fill the gourd with yerba mate and hot water, let it sit for a day, then empty it and scrub out the inside, then repeat at least once. 1. Fill the gourd about half to two thirds full of yerba mate. Cover the gourd with your hand, turn it over and gently shake it. This brings the smaller particles to the top. 2. Tilt the gourd at a 45-degree angle and remove your hand. Keep the gourd at a 45-degree angle (some people set it on the bombilla, depending on the type of gourd). 3. Fill the empty side of the gourd with room temperature water. Keep the water below the top of the Mate. 4. Insert the bombilla into the empty side of the gourd where you added the water. Let it reach the bottom of the gourd, then gently push it into the yerba; do not stir. Let sit for a couple of minutes to allow for the Mate to absorb the water. 5. Slowly pour hot water (not boiling) into the same empty space. We recommend a maximum of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow the water to cover the Mate. Keep it below the top. Many people prefer to simply use room-temperature water. 6. Drink through the bombilla until the water is gone. Do your best to keep it in place and not move it around too much. Depending on how much mate you use, the type of mate, and the temperature of the water. You can continue to enjoy multiple servings by refilling your gourd with water. After you're done, empty the gourd, rinse it with water, and pat it dry inside and then outside with a towel or paper towel. Some people will then set their gourd in the sun. Do not use soap, as it can affect the flavor of future mate preparations. This item is considered perishable. We are unable to accept returns unless the wrong item is shipped or the item is damaged.
