Description
Hello friends, This is a new Davis Brothers knife, a Custom # 3 Wood Carving Detail Knife. This medium sized variation of the pattern was made with a more slim shape, and has a curved cutting edge with a straight spine and fine tip. This is a great knife to have at hand for detailed carving and whittling work, but also robust enough for rouging out carvings. You will want it right on your workbench within easy reach. With a beautiful complementary handle style, made of Patagonian Rosewood, it makes a really attractive combination. This knife was hand forged by a carver, for carvers, right here on the Pacific Northwest Coast. Davis Bros., well known for high quality hand forged NW Coast style woodcarving tools, will make a limited number of some favorites. We make a wide selection of Crook or Crooked knives, Detail knives and Hook knives, as well as Chip Carving and Whittling knives. Detail knives are used in accompaniment with crook knives, as well as chip carving and other stock removal knives. SAFETY FIRST! : This blade is extremely sharp. Please take care when removing from package. Always be aware of where you are cutting, and do not put hands, fingers or other parts of your body in the path of the blade. Always wear a cut-resistant carving glove on the hand not holding the knife. And please keep this knife safely away from children. WORKMANSHIP: Each knife is unique and hand crafted, with no automated processes used in the more than 30 machining, forging and woodworking tasks for each one. Some very fine tool marks may be visible on the knives. I do not attain absolute machine-like perfection, but strive to combine art, beauty and utility. The look and feel of this tool when held is beautiful, smooth, and inspires the work at hand. BLADE: It was made using 1095 high carbon blade steel, ground to shape then forged, refined and hardened. It was then tempered to keep a durable, keen edge and is extremely sharp. The blade is 2 1/8" long, and tapers from 3/8" over the length of the blade. The blade profile has a slight curvature along the cutting edge which makes it relatively easy to sharpen. HANDLE: The handle is a pretty piece of Patagonian Rosewood, with a light reddish-brown background and dark stripes, a beautiful piece. This is one of the hardest and most dense woods I have worked with and it makes delightful handles. This elegant handle fits neatly into your hand and is excellent for both general carving and fine control. Patagonian Rosewood is one of the few woods that needs no finish, as it takes a wonderful polish on it's own. It was buffed with Carnauba wax, and will develop a wonderful patina as it is used. CONSTRUCTION: This knife is 7 3/4" overall, with a 2 1/8" long blade, with a 1 3/4" working edge, that is 3/8" wide before tapering to a fine point. The cutting edge has a gradual curvature overall and at the tip with a gently curved spine. The blade is set with epoxy and further secured with two bronze rivets. CARVING CHARACTERISTICS: I have used a blade similar to this for many years in my knife shop. It is very handy for lots of general cutting tasks. This blade is ideal for carving and whittling in the round, as well as roughing out of carvings. As the end is pointed, It will also do cleanup, detail work and stop cuts. The curvature of the edge allows smooth curves to be cut while incising and slicing. With a double bevel edge, this knife can be used with either hand, and cuts well either pushing or pulling. The blade has plenty of strength for these tasks, but should not be used for prying. For best performance, when sharpening this tool both sides should be touched up. SHIPPING AND CUSTOMER SERVICE: I have several auctions running this week , and will gladly combine shipping to save you money. Wait for the combined invoice if you have multiple purchases/wins. I offer a 30 day return policy and will personally work to resolve any issues. I strive for Quality and Customer Satisfaction.
