The genus Corallus comprises 4 species which are found mainly in Central and South America and some islands in the Caribbean area. In short, the tropical part of America. They are adapted to life in the trees, occupying the tropical rain forest, plantations, gardens, etc. Because of their splendid colours, character and intriguing behaviour they are becoming more popular within the hobby. Although they are increasingly kept and bred by snake-lovers, it must be noted that some of species of this group of 4 are easier to maintain in captivity than others and are therefore kept and bought more frequently. C. Hortulanus (the Amazon tree boa) has been especially popular for many years because of the colour varieties, attractive price and relatively straight forward husbandry requirements. In contrast, however, C. Caninus (the Emerald tree boa) and C. Annulatus (the Annulated tree boa) have exacting requirements for their care, are difficult to breed and are expensive to purchase. But like so many species it is just a matter of time until one knows how to look after and breed them. A beautiful example of this is Epicrates cenchria cenchria (the Brazilian rainbow boa). Years ago you would have paid 350 Euro for a beautiful captive bred animal and at this point in time they are less than 100 Euro. Years ago C. hortulanus cost 45 Euro and now the price can vary from 75 Euro up to 200 Euro for a captive bred animal, depending on the colour. It is a matter of supply and demand  influenced by the preference of the hobbyist for certain colours.
